As a clueless 18-year-old jazz studies major I was told I should check out Chick Corea. So, I went out and got <i>Verve Jazz Masters 3 - Chick Corea</i>, a greatest hits collection featuring "You're Everything", "Spain", and a number of other Chick classics. I was already familiar with some of Joel's work, and had used his book <i>Basic Drumming </i>back when I first started teaching as a good catch-all book that would cover a lot of topics and last beginner students for a couple of years. What I didn't know, however, was that not only has Joel been living in London for the last 40 years, but he lives a mere 15 minutes from me.</span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"> </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">So, a few weeks ago, Joel invited me to his home and we spent a couple hours talking about drumming, teaching, living in the UK as an American, etc. etc. And he very kindly gave me a great selection over his more than 100 books. I'm looking forward to spending some time with them. I hope work my way through some of them in the coming months and will let you know what I find.</span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDGBlIsvFfCYO6K8ywBfM65upneHgE3PHvkUdsDWAOPU_mytqF2UjYClLo3QpwV83OE3v8ZzO9hrRrVAZAwaAoe0F82h_gkoh7dhFv-OMoBz8UtsTFJym6OKhtlh3oYNGrVmQ4xseg00wwMFjmOivIck6RgZR2EuApX2naroUQLRhUF1fu4U41BnfI5fM/s3024/IMG_7947.heic" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2817" data-original-width="3024" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDGBlIsvFfCYO6K8ywBfM65upneHgE3PHvkUdsDWAOPU_mytqF2UjYClLo3QpwV83OE3v8ZzO9hrRrVAZAwaAoe0F82h_gkoh7dhFv-OMoBz8UtsTFJym6OKhtlh3oYNGrVmQ4xseg00wwMFjmOivIck6RgZR2EuApX2naroUQLRhUF1fu4U41BnfI5fM/s320/IMG_7947.heic" width="320" /></a></div><br /> </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="font-size: small;">You can find out more about Joel on his website, www.joelrothman.com, and many of his books are available from Hudson Music.</span><br /></span></div>Adam Osmianskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00279858833369288332noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8117964668899556736.post-11909264265437062962024-03-03T14:35:00.002+00:002024-03-03T17:26:10.503+00:00Transcription - Enéas Costa, "Sonho Meu"<div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><a href="http://thatdrumblog.blogspot.com/search/label/En%C3%A9as%20Costa" target="_blank">Enéas Costa</a> is a real mystery as best as I can tell. His discography is impressive, having recorded with the likes of Gal Costa, Chico Buarque, Edu Lobo, and Caetano Veloso. But I've never been able to find out much else about him; where he is/was from, whether he's still alive, nothing. The only thing I've ever found is one picture which supposedly shows him playing with the great saxophonist J.T. Mereilles, and bassist Luizão Maia, who played with Elis Regina for many years.</span></div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYE9vAH0ZGL1saU5OtkNB8NyzKdVbxUmJtotlXzmsR4RgCrPoJFPhdA5MAK1E4WWbL6iHDJUSCgnf1Q3NZfuij8vZfS2Ey6AtmjL1CvKmC0zEEom1qbv87q2xCf27Ksyg5pU4-phrtki86Ws0XYvN6kk0jtiQJCOooOfE2TFXh-NMtFou8oLY3du0M5ow/s707/Eneas%20Costa.jpg" style="font-family: helvetica; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="491" data-original-width="707" height="278" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYE9vAH0ZGL1saU5OtkNB8NyzKdVbxUmJtotlXzmsR4RgCrPoJFPhdA5MAK1E4WWbL6iHDJUSCgnf1Q3NZfuij8vZfS2Ey6AtmjL1CvKmC0zEEom1qbv87q2xCf27Ksyg5pU4-phrtki86Ws0XYvN6kk0jtiQJCOooOfE2TFXh-NMtFou8oLY3du0M5ow/w400-h278/Eneas%20Costa.jpg" width="400" /> </a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"> </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">But we can certainly hear a lot of him, because his name appears on many an album credit. In addition to the names above, Costa also did considerable work with Maria Bethânia. Here he is playing the standard "Sonho Meu", from Bethânia's album <i>Álibi</i>. This recording also features Gal Costa on vocals, Rosinha de Valença on guitar and cavaquinho, the aforementioned Luizão Maia on bass, and a young Tutty Moreno on percussion.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">I've done a traditional note-for-note transcription, but below that is a simplified version, which just shows the comping pattern, which is the real sauce of the phrasing and what we're likely most interested in gleaning from a transcription of this nature. You can then play along with the recording with brushes, a tamborim, whatever you like, really.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"> </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; This is an era of Blakey I've not been too familiar with until now. I know he played in fellow Pittsburgher, Billy Eckstine's band and with Fletcher Henderson in the big band era, and did some work with Dizzy Gillespie. Bit still, when I think of Blakey I (like most people, probably) tend think of the Jazz Messengers, of driving shuffles, and of hard bop leaders like Hank Mobley, Jimmy Smith, and Lee Morgan. So I find it really interesting to hear him playing in this much earlier bebop style.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: helvetica;">The left hand comping, which I've transcribed here is out of sight, but what also struck me was the bass drum. That's far more than "feathering". He's thumping that thing pretty hard on all four beats, which I think still carried over a bit from the big band era before it started getting lighter. I only notated the bass drum when he plays it even harder than the "feathering", or when it feels like part of the larger phrase. Some years I post more than others, but regardless, I have no plans of stopping any time soon and hope that 2024 will afford me some more time to transcribe, write, post and share with all of you.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Happy New Year!</span></div>Adam Osmianskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00279858833369288332noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8117964668899556736.post-91466581967543680952023-11-28T12:25:00.001+00:002023-11-28T12:25:30.373+00:00A forró primer, part 2 - Baião<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Let’s start the meat of this series with the rhythm of forró that many drummers are familiar with on one form or another, baião. For most drumset players, baião simply means this groove:</span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlKpozTrFBiIjd7Fyrg3hRWRcFI6M3KjCKBvFz12hu7X_mKUN63MEwsCOnSiEtcJDeT3PmPxVKozfCfCyT2YwFXUvvUDm6nMpfj0tjsK7q7cNLtAyNyPW9kWfQnrTJ1DfA-0XPT8FxczvVoA_sCoXMIjOnoPZrL_gffPr_rZtE7r9jR1Pv95KCkjdwi6A/s549/Drumset.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><img border="0" data-original-height="51" data-original-width="549" height="38" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlKpozTrFBiIjd7Fyrg3hRWRcFI6M3KjCKBvFz12hu7X_mKUN63MEwsCOnSiEtcJDeT3PmPxVKozfCfCyT2YwFXUvvUDm6nMpfj0tjsK7q7cNLtAyNyPW9kWfQnrTJ1DfA-0XPT8FxczvVoA_sCoXMIjOnoPZrL_gffPr_rZtE7r9jR1Pv95KCkjdwi6A/w400-h38/Drumset.jpg" width="400" /></span></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div>
<p style="font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">And I wouldn’t even say that that’s wrong per se. It’s just missing a lot of nuance that makes a baião what it is. And without that nuance one could also be playing a forró or a xaxado as all three of these styles have this cell in them:</span></p><p style="font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAh9apEC30myEGX7cvORSz9wE1Law0aMx6OsMAwbzWOYGqa5rhx56aHVipklGQK7Xz_5c3HU98Mcpd_3QDAukOylawX354ZIIsLUKjGitaSCVLil21hPtT8mDETNe2v8Xj3O8PA1H9ShRAmf6q-Z4vt7wRr4rckGYt4Bs3QHX7lMGE4QF6VEhyphenhyphentjl5sxw/s273/Cell.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><img border="0" data-original-height="52" data-original-width="273" height="61" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAh9apEC30myEGX7cvORSz9wE1Law0aMx6OsMAwbzWOYGqa5rhx56aHVipklGQK7Xz_5c3HU98Mcpd_3QDAukOylawX354ZIIsLUKjGitaSCVLil21hPtT8mDETNe2v8Xj3O8PA1H9ShRAmf6q-Z4vt7wRr4rckGYt4Bs3QHX7lMGE4QF6VEhyphenhyphentjl5sxw/w320-h61/Cell.jpg" width="320" /></span></a></div><p style="font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></p>

Simply play the bacalhau part on your snare drum (a cross stick is probably most appropriate), and the low zabumba part on your bass drum. Given that the closed and open strokes really characterize the different rhythms you may even want to try to imitate this yourself on the bass drum by burying the beater and playing off the head, but it certainly isn’t easy to coordinate at first. </span></p>

It is a family of multiple rhythms and dances. Where the confusion often comes in is that one of the rhythms in said family is called “forró”. Here’s a little chart to clarify.</span></p>

A zabumba is essentially a bass drum worn on a sling. This is where most of our drumset adaptations come from. The top head is played with a mallet, and is usually muffled in the center, and the bottom head is played with a very thin stick called a bacalhau, creating a very high-pitched snap.</span></p><p style="font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEikgSJMjTq2t71OvB3vjfXzXNLbPvVmqy69LAz9hHZJ7EpJZGzyZq46OHPsI7eCQ1M0DmY2vu8q3XmfaPo-FpaQkVpLgWsldZ6gGS2Fxo2DSQ3klpjEounRaYwUpQaxVAihzZwG3edSfLuCRH8rwZS-xUdjbJUQ_ruU03YxLhM6P3LDtR0DBSzOUQdhJmM" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1440" data-original-width="1440" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEikgSJMjTq2t71OvB3vjfXzXNLbPvVmqy69LAz9hHZJ7EpJZGzyZq46OHPsI7eCQ1M0DmY2vu8q3XmfaPo-FpaQkVpLgWsldZ6gGS2Fxo2DSQ3klpjEounRaYwUpQaxVAihzZwG3edSfLuCRH8rwZS-xUdjbJUQ_ruU03YxLhM6P3LDtR0DBSzOUQdhJmM=w400-h400" width="400" /></a></div><p></p>

He created the exercise in response to Joe Morello telling him that a "professional drummer" should be able to play flamadiddlediddles as sextuplets at 120 bpm. John describes this as "wicked fast", and I couldn't help but noticed that he didn't actually play them at that tempo in the video. I know I can't! Either way it's a fun and handy little exercise so I jotted it down to share with you.</span></div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiLtoR0fg1HNuG_CxeeKWw8R1Bs5Yk_NP2rwzprBJDBUnh7euVgwl5m-muw07u5QPWTt3MwZXJF_Z4G5M_6YLMt80aLgYITyeCADmbA7zlfcjM1E-vCgJksroJiMKXg3kz8PInND7zaoVoc6wXp4D330JA0DGDCL2mrLfwTo8ntxDbnZdG-DH9DKRSEmSA" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="275" data-original-width="576" height="191" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiLtoR0fg1HNuG_CxeeKWw8R1Bs5Yk_NP2rwzprBJDBUnh7euVgwl5m-muw07u5QPWTt3MwZXJF_Z4G5M_6YLMt80aLgYITyeCADmbA7zlfcjM1E-vCgJksroJiMKXg3kz8PInND7zaoVoc6wXp4D330JA0DGDCL2mrLfwTo8ntxDbnZdG-DH9DKRSEmSA=w400-h191" width="400" /></a></div><p></p>Adam Osmianskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00279858833369288332noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8117964668899556736.post-20793018549961715862023-05-12T17:56:00.001+01:002023-05-12T17:56:36.823+01:00Handmade pandeiros<div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">If you're a regular reader of the blog then I certainly apologize for my incredibly light posting in recent months. For one, I'm working on a new record with my band,<a href="https://sambaazul.bandcamp.com/album/samba-azul" target="_blank"> Samba Azul</a>. But also, I've been building my own pandeiros, which I'm delighted to share with you now.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">I'm not bending my own shells, <i>yet</i>. But everything is cut, drilled, filed, and finished by hand. And most importantly, the platinelas (jingles) are completely hand cut, hammered, and lathed.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">I've been working with blank shells, but I've also experimented with upcycling old toms that have been separated from their drumset family.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">If you're interested in purchasing one, <a href="http://www.adamosmianski.com/contact" target="_blank">drop me an e-mail</a> and we'll chat about the different options available.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/QFv1qqBHgVI" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></div>Adam Osmianskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00279858833369288332noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8117964668899556736.post-61913618922226812432023-04-14T17:35:00.002+01:002023-06-13T11:27:58.069+01:00Double strokes in odd groupings<div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><a href="http://thatdrumblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Kiko%20Freitas" target="_blank">Kiko Freitas</a> recently posted this exercise in which he plays a double stroke roll in groupings of 5, 7, and 9. In the post Kiko points out that this is a good way to develop technique and internal time. I also find it helps me hear - and more importantly, feel - odd note groupings and visualize them in different ways as with each odd grouping you'll start once on the first note of a double on each hand, and once with the second note of a double on each hand.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">I would start by spending some time with each tuplet, but once you start to get comfortable with it you can try a bar of quintuplets, a bar of septuplets, and a bar of ninelets (nonlets?), and then work your way back down.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwgQ18bqXkOn4gpQ1-4yls6pKVSCYWR9kmHQFWKdlAo7QJtkVCpuqRuGTNjpcDTCJIsXiOfJdUEvoPKurIzHe3TxOVmD_q2yu2K3CmlvQh09gVLIEuJkHgGH98TM0dblpVP0YvlsfFs8N4MhQ0Lwi7IsOYxq6clIqdSReNeLqbIe2O9cQhmj5ToHg4/s573/5,%207,%209%20doubles.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="231" data-original-width="573" height="161" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwgQ18bqXkOn4gpQ1-4yls6pKVSCYWR9kmHQFWKdlAo7QJtkVCpuqRuGTNjpcDTCJIsXiOfJdUEvoPKurIzHe3TxOVmD_q2yu2K3CmlvQh09gVLIEuJkHgGH98TM0dblpVP0YvlsfFs8N4MhQ0Lwi7IsOYxq6clIqdSReNeLqbIe2O9cQhmj5ToHg4/w400-h161/5,%207,%209%20doubles.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div>Adam Osmianskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00279858833369288332noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8117964668899556736.post-50575694208936023032023-03-15T13:04:00.003+00:002023-03-15T13:04:50.408+00:00Sticks (Baquetas) ala Toninho Pinheiro<div><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Apparently, this is how the great Brazilian drummer, Toninho Pinheiro, liked his sticks....</span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjALIlp9etSvLqL5TKL9PHO6LY-qjg7jyGMfg3tXEOR15QYQH97yrKoKkWwYO_-MmjZjtZoRDNbLMOGRARPKbrlQ76jxnO1hDRtdquNFcP0xr8nqBaenDi3vtc8EULP4NnTaiij2gkF-sAByTBk0j17bpypKxIfxGlIJsJv2Yn8sGmHkoaELKI8RC6X/s4032/IMG_5707.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjALIlp9etSvLqL5TKL9PHO6LY-qjg7jyGMfg3tXEOR15QYQH97yrKoKkWwYO_-MmjZjtZoRDNbLMOGRARPKbrlQ76jxnO1hDRtdquNFcP0xr8nqBaenDi3vtc8EULP4NnTaiij2gkF-sAByTBk0j17bpypKxIfxGlIJsJv2Yn8sGmHkoaELKI8RC6X/s320/IMG_5707.HEIC" width="240" /></a></div></div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: helvetica;">And I think his were even sharper.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Now, I didn't want to destroy a perfectly good pair of sticks, so I figured I'd try it on an old pair first. These were chewed up from many a rim click, and the tips were chipped. So I sanded the shaft smooth, sanded the tip all the way off, and then applied a couple coats of finishing oil, and I have to say, they're actually pretty cool. Not sure I'll be doing it all the time, but it was a worthy experiment.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Toninho first started doing this because he was playing background music in restaurants and wanted a more delicate sound without having to mute his heavy Zildjian Avedis cymbals. It ended up becoming part of his sound as he found the modified sticks to be perfect for the delicate cymbal sound needed to play Bossa Nova.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: helvetica;">I didn't do the final step, which was, after removing the tip with sandpaper, dipping the new tip in a mixture on paint thinner so as to draw out any moisture, which further helped to create a light attack. He used to heat his sticks for the same reasons.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: helvetica;">I've read that other Brazilian drummers of the time did this as well so as to be able to play faster tempos at lighter dynamics, but I can't seem to find reference to any names other than Toninho.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Tonhino's name doesn't seem to get mentioned as much as Edison Machado, Milton Banana, and Dom um Romão, but you should definitely check him out if you're at all interested in Brazilian jazz. He did long stints in Jongo Trio who supported Elis Regina, Som Três, a trio with Cesar Camargo Mariano that backed Wilson Simonal, and with Dick Farney's trio. And he worked as a sideman with many of the biggest names in Brazil, like Alaíde Costa and Beth Carvalho.</span></div>Adam Osmianskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00279858833369288332noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8117964668899556736.post-69964826169827437822023-02-10T11:30:00.002+00:002023-03-15T11:35:50.562+00:00"Thoughts by Elvin"<div style="text-align: left;"><p style="text-align: left;"></p><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="caret-color: rgb(25, 28, 31);">This list of quotes by Elvin Jones has been around for awhile, but I've been seeing it make the rounds again </span><span style="caret-color: rgb(25, 28, 31);">lately in the drumming and jazz circles of social media, and they are great. It was about some of the pioneers who left New England to start settling western lands of the US, in this case specifically along the Ohio River. It's an excellent book, aptly titled, <i>The Pioneers</i>, if you're interested.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: helvetica;">A quote from one of the settlers really stood out to me:</span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><i><span style="font-size: medium;">Count the day lost at which the setting sun sees at its close no worthy action done.</span></i></div></span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><i><br /></i></span><span style="font-family: helvetica;">I was quickly reminded that it's waaaay too easy these days to waste our short time on frivolity, and if want to do something - in my case be the best drummer I can be - then we should get our heads down and get on with it. I'll be remember this one on days where I'm tempted to not practice, or I find myself wasting perfectly good time on social media.</span></div>Adam Osmianskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00279858833369288332noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8117964668899556736.post-9277690577397330202023-01-06T22:15:00.006+00:002023-01-24T22:29:57.403+00:00Allison Miller's post-Christmas work out<div><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Allison Miller posted this exercise on Instagram the other day to "reconnect the four limbs after not playing during the holidays", and I've really been enjoying as I took an extra long break from my usual practice routine this Christmas.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Allison explains that she's been doing this exercise for 20 years as a way to "connect with [her] ride cymbal better and ... understand the connection between the four limbs".</span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: helvetica;">It's quarter note triplets played as paradiddles between the right foot and left hand, starting first on the downbeat, then on the second partial of the triplet, and finally the third. For brevity I've just jotted them all down one after another, but Allison puts four bars of improvised time between each one.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8OEcp7onUVKsYuLNlKc3vItSpe7aq25urbRo_RUHkih8Py48tuJ9ak_R_RH5BvSYVrjh4jbMvmY6HzZ9TcIXcENbS1raL-jj771VVKK79YhxlN2pdu-3hDnMDRy5sPDBBqWiI0o5Zc9NxPaWLyEUMfHz7JU-0-m3sv8ifgUE-baUUX6hZcSS4bT3x/s570/Allison%20Miller%20new%20year%20exercise.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="244" data-original-width="570" height="171" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8OEcp7onUVKsYuLNlKc3vItSpe7aq25urbRo_RUHkih8Py48tuJ9ak_R_RH5BvSYVrjh4jbMvmY6HzZ9TcIXcENbS1raL-jj771VVKK79YhxlN2pdu-3hDnMDRy5sPDBBqWiI0o5Zc9NxPaWLyEUMfHz7JU-0-m3sv8ifgUE-baUUX6hZcSS4bT3x/w400-h171/Allison%20Miller%20new%20year%20exercise.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div>Adam Osmianskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00279858833369288332noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8117964668899556736.post-61357430587396016662022-12-20T20:42:00.005+00:002023-01-24T21:05:34.920+00:00Transcription - Cuca Teixeira, "Tá Perdoado"<p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">In re-listening to <i>Samba Meu</i> for the repique de anel arrangement in the <a href="http://thatdrumblog.blogspot.com/2022/12/transcription-nene-brown-trajetoria.html" target="_blank">last post</a> I was also reminded of the fantastic playing by the two drummers on the record <a href="http://thatdrumblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Camilo%20Mariano" target="_blank">Camilo Mariano</a> and <a href="http://thatdrumblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Cuca%20Teixeira" target="_blank">Cuca Teixera</a>.</span></p>
<p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">The transcription below is of Cuca. You can clearly see/hear his style on this tune just as you can in the transcription of “<a href="http://thatdrumblog.blogspot.com/2014/02/transcription-cuca-teixeira-recado.html" target="_blank">Recado</a>” that I did way back when. I love the interplay between the rim click and hi-hat. I’ve got a post in the works for further developing that sound, so hopefully I’ll get that up soon. The album came out right at the same time I bought my first pandeiro. I listened to it over and over and over again, and tried (and initially failed) to play along to the record. At first I couldn't even make it through a single tune, but with practice I could get through the slower songs, then the faster ones, and eventually I could play the whole album top to bottom with no break, which was incredibly satisfying. So as this record was so influential in my pandeiro development I thought I'd revisit it to try to find some repique material.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br />As mentioned earlier, Nene demonstrates some more modern language that we don't hear in the earliest Dotô recordings. There are some different rhythmic ideas, and he also presses the head for higher pitched sounds, which I notated that with dots above the notes.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Even if you're not interested in playing repique de anel, there's some great material here that you can develop for the drumset or other instruments. Or even just listen and follow along for a better understanding of some of the phrasing that happens in samba.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnGzJizIXMcgmr8hjcL2J0CAiUdbIzwo8IV_rnqOAGchj64j9UVXLufBF9BpVzupRKw7EcmglJ_BLPq-3vYQlL4Ls_YlZA3UP2hFMgOWhb25VeyVqdawpR75jcnt_UDI8DYmQGgzMopGvvwJJaqraG-vgU5pAWOaLPtaWdqyboQLQHU7Q5ALvbTQ5Y/s792/Trajetoria%201.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="792" data-original-width="612" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnGzJizIXMcgmr8hjcL2J0CAiUdbIzwo8IV_rnqOAGchj64j9UVXLufBF9BpVzupRKw7EcmglJ_BLPq-3vYQlL4Ls_YlZA3UP2hFMgOWhb25VeyVqdawpR75jcnt_UDI8DYmQGgzMopGvvwJJaqraG-vgU5pAWOaLPtaWdqyboQLQHU7Q5ALvbTQ5Y/w309-h400/Trajetoria%201.jpg" width="309" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6J_0kXnMjDLG2bj0m256KrIYvDVgk4EhhkCLetQ1gsCZvOhKj11b0tg8CrlUzGQLOVX5LqjiWT-TiNKiW-lMzfrfTv11Jy8txmK_8o0F0PmpUfEUKsgDBfeeMx2adpZKXDR6D5GEk7VzET8o3_Do1vycp-6yympysHmdT8rilKxjNthBfi_tM8rkm/s792/Trajetoria%202.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="792" data-original-width="612" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6J_0kXnMjDLG2bj0m256KrIYvDVgk4EhhkCLetQ1gsCZvOhKj11b0tg8CrlUzGQLOVX5LqjiWT-TiNKiW-lMzfrfTv11Jy8txmK_8o0F0PmpUfEUKsgDBfeeMx2adpZKXDR6D5GEk7VzET8o3_Do1vycp-6yympysHmdT8rilKxjNthBfi_tM8rkm/w309-h400/Trajetoria%202.jpg" width="309" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe0WaH9jqXpWbGtIeb0NvzF70zMlk0QVztU8djJEO13ltUX4Sm6Seo61YL1yFY-LcGrY-3E9q1LUkJQ0ZqmYRyu17VLVfzU5SgElK-d2onQUTOZhcRy1EaKn6QWHtGMClhfCEuMq1uFCkEsB-BlRNm6IU2mLWWyIH0zeuS_vmTGyaWMofzXQBmijq6/s792/Trajetoria%203.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="792" data-original-width="612" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe0WaH9jqXpWbGtIeb0NvzF70zMlk0QVztU8djJEO13ltUX4Sm6Seo61YL1yFY-LcGrY-3E9q1LUkJQ0ZqmYRyu17VLVfzU5SgElK-d2onQUTOZhcRy1EaKn6QWHtGMClhfCEuMq1uFCkEsB-BlRNm6IU2mLWWyIH0zeuS_vmTGyaWMofzXQBmijq6/w309-h400/Trajetoria%203.jpg" width="309" /></a></div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/kt4wb78HYzg" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></div>Adam Osmianskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00279858833369288332noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8117964668899556736.post-57633058885370935442022-11-08T18:14:00.005+00:002022-11-08T18:14:58.150+00:00Four-stroke ruffs<div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Carrying on with some Philly Joe-ish ideas, here is a simple sheet on the four-stroke ruff, a rudiment you'll hear plenty of if you're checking him out.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: helvetica;">The four-stroke ruff is more a sound than a sticking, because just about any sticking you can come up with is valid. It's simply three triplets, often played more than once so it rolls over the bar, with an accent on the first note of the first triplet each time.</span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZxyK3ApfxZEpOiO29LZ8ZUWJETzGBR63oFZTwuz0eWt8aC_4igx_YOfDp-DUmP8xdnuwrjVCWMK_uIy_O714jBsAKtZ1dxelOEI94x1Kuq3mVyZ_F8-97IOKswMREeJ-OTSUDJjBcyBRWbJ_JZzUZ6k-sDR8Cr4iOZ59glnyMAE36XU0DgWu04YKX/s393/Triplets.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><img border="0" data-original-height="44" data-original-width="393" height="45" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZxyK3ApfxZEpOiO29LZ8ZUWJETzGBR63oFZTwuz0eWt8aC_4igx_YOfDp-DUmP8xdnuwrjVCWMK_uIy_O714jBsAKtZ1dxelOEI94x1Kuq3mVyZ_F8-97IOKswMREeJ-OTSUDJjBcyBRWbJ_JZzUZ6k-sDR8Cr4iOZ59glnyMAE36XU0DgWu04YKX/w400-h45/Triplets.jpg" width="400" /></span></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">You could, of course, simply play this as single strokes with no problem. This stuff blew my mind. I had friends who were really into acid house, techno, and happy hardcore, but that sound always seemed cheesy and boring to me. As electronic music went, though, I could fully appreciate what Squarepusher was doing and enjoyed other artists in the drum 'n' bass/IDM/big beat scenes.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br />The first album I picked up was <i>Feed Me Weird Things</i>, the opening track "Squarepusher Theme" being a personal favorite of mine then and now.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/jLpbqUFNwLI" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;">I transcribed some of it 10 or 15 years ago, but it was a real slog, and when the laptop which stored the not backed up transcription was stolen I didn't have the heart or patience to start it again.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br />But recently I was checking out a later Squarepusher release called <i>Ultravisitor</i> and decided to write out some of the playing from the tune "Iambic 9 Poetry". Squarepusher, real name Tom Jenkinson, is not only a DJ/producer but also an excellent bassist, with most of his bass lines being played live.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Jenkinson also plays drums and I believe is the one playing them on "Iambic 9 Poetry". With Squarepusher's material it can sometimes be difficult to differentiate between what is played live and what is programmed. It's even more difficult on this tune and all of <i>Ultravisitor</i> as he used clips from live performances in the creation of this studio album. The drums on this particular tune sound pretty live to me until about the halfway point where it sounds like the might be some programming or effects going on.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Either way, it's a cool groove on a cool tune, so here is what I'm pretty sure is Tom Jenkinson playing drums on "Iambic 9 Poetry". The first line repeats pretty much the same from 0:55 to about 2:10 where the second line starts and continues until in becomes basically untranscribable around 3:22.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1GCQ4pTISXAudznZqPM-M0UJdiAR0PZLBVdc_iumLHo_L_ZMJjGAKJ0PljxTgmoHlmUSojEgOP9aeoJvCAyl9BFBfsVwG7T2t3jTpLrCRHxnhe3h85dEBw9NqAciV2c7ezdTY-t4A4_iI8NSDujUgHLozTwEzH8-DjwylRV6hannIog8e1qNHwv90/s792/Iambic%209%20Poetry%201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="792" data-original-width="612" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1GCQ4pTISXAudznZqPM-M0UJdiAR0PZLBVdc_iumLHo_L_ZMJjGAKJ0PljxTgmoHlmUSojEgOP9aeoJvCAyl9BFBfsVwG7T2t3jTpLrCRHxnhe3h85dEBw9NqAciV2c7ezdTY-t4A4_iI8NSDujUgHLozTwEzH8-DjwylRV6hannIog8e1qNHwv90/w309-h400/Iambic%209%20Poetry%201.jpg" width="309" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqtS3bMCjk64MeDAZjVQAu30Fz2DI4dIcmqK9GtWGEljBIL0fvWL36XarqY70ic6t2h9Gi8nUONA20OcPPqlZTkW-CM5_hiva46rOH6G4AnchLMYs_rFaBzI1ftUT7yu5e_xgLocTQTOJOiMB6h3vPSJsATwk7V8Wh2X0JVdd4i67ivdXw77inZCJ3/s792/Iambic%209%20Poetry%202.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="792" data-original-width="612" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqtS3bMCjk64MeDAZjVQAu30Fz2DI4dIcmqK9GtWGEljBIL0fvWL36XarqY70ic6t2h9Gi8nUONA20OcPPqlZTkW-CM5_hiva46rOH6G4AnchLMYs_rFaBzI1ftUT7yu5e_xgLocTQTOJOiMB6h3vPSJsATwk7V8Wh2X0JVdd4i67ivdXw77inZCJ3/w309-h400/Iambic%209%20Poetry%202.jpg" width="309" /></a></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/PnlIRuP7Pwo" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></div>Adam Osmianskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00279858833369288332noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8117964668899556736.post-89074090466423210112022-10-18T11:02:00.002+01:002022-10-19T16:24:22.281+01:00Solo transcription - Andy Kravitz, "St. Teresa"<span style="font-family: helvetica;">This is one of the first solos that taught me about subtlety.</span><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;">In high school, my private teacher at the time suggested I check out Joan Osborne's album <i>Relish</i>. I was skeptical because as a hard rock loving teenager I thought "One of Us", the hit single from that album, was stupid. But, as he had yet to lead me astray, I nonetheless used my allowance money to pick up a copy of the album which I found was indeed very good.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;">One of the main reasons he suggested the album was because one or two tunes feature Omar Hakim, and the rest of the album has drummer/producer Andy Kravitz behind the kit. Kravitz has worked with a wide array of artists that you'll especially remember from the 90s like Juliana Hatfield, Cypress Hill, Spearhead, and Urge Overkill, as well as with bigger names like Billy Joel and The Rolling Stones. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Another one of the singles from <i>Relish</i>, "St. Teresa" has an understated solo at the end. I still remember thinking how crazy it was that he wasn't playing all that many notes but it was still really cool. The bass drum and rim click were coming in unexpected places to great effect.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;">This popped into my head the other day, so I put it on and realized I still remembered the solo note for note, so I figured I'd quickly jot it down and share it with you. Solo starts around 4:30.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh20NdzxaOlGsPPCQEQPH2jc5gcT0MyiGVbjTTglm40_aH_YqP1dkDG25NxfhsgNbr8tiK4YW9lhbjiHtee4hgNlYc2_Nb9f2U0m2uB2tnHC6sCESr0Nx0znkLo-3K7Ed-jkRZCVIB6Nitasi_P6uAq1a3XXIkC8GuZsN-AvjbN7h4uzMOpiHXoimFC/s792/St.%20Teresa.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="792" data-original-width="612" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh20NdzxaOlGsPPCQEQPH2jc5gcT0MyiGVbjTTglm40_aH_YqP1dkDG25NxfhsgNbr8tiK4YW9lhbjiHtee4hgNlYc2_Nb9f2U0m2uB2tnHC6sCESr0Nx0znkLo-3K7Ed-jkRZCVIB6Nitasi_P6uAq1a3XXIkC8GuZsN-AvjbN7h4uzMOpiHXoimFC/w309-h400/St.%20Teresa.jpg" width="309" /></a></div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/PX1PhaVeOGM" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></div>Adam Osmianskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00279858833369288332noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8117964668899556736.post-76341476003750789712022-10-11T11:01:00.003+01:002022-10-11T11:01:48.079+01:00Transcription - Dotô, "Incompatibilidade de Gênios"<div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Continuing on with the <a href="http://thatdrumblog.blogspot.com/2022/09/repique-de-anel.html" target="_blank">repique de anel</a> that I mentioned in the last post, here is a transcription of one of the most famous recordings of the instrument. I had been wanting one for awhile anyway, and then ended up spending some time talking about it in my lesson with <a href="http://thatdrumblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Kiko%20Freitas" target="_blank">Kiko Freitas</a>.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqC56LwBZiSe8__y_YDN9wGpEmdxu9XXBHJ6O-A3k4T0NcO1MfKARGCEjQBomd_hKw2mR6emsh-v9MFyfn7fqQAzmi3yQi2nGIuu0suaL2tjBbwBt7htUckBgIzo9zBfvMk5tBDi37LZ6VcI1sHg9aMpUCukV7DTwEwNxJu5cuOVEHjahTUPaR8dY7/s3024/IMG_8295.jpg.webp" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqC56LwBZiSe8__y_YDN9wGpEmdxu9XXBHJ6O-A3k4T0NcO1MfKARGCEjQBomd_hKw2mR6emsh-v9MFyfn7fqQAzmi3yQi2nGIuu0suaL2tjBbwBt7htUckBgIzo9zBfvMk5tBDi37LZ6VcI1sHg9aMpUCukV7DTwEwNxJu5cuOVEHjahTUPaR8dY7/s320/IMG_8295.jpg.webp" width="320" /></span></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">It was invented by a man named "<a href="http://thatdrumblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Dotô" target="_blank">Dotô</a>" or "Doutor to Repique". As best as I can tell he took a regular samba repique, tuned it down, and played it with his hands, the idea being that he could create a full samba sound with this instrument alone. The only picture I've been able to find of him is a grainy shot from a video of him playing with Clara Nunes.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1ZcgZsiplQhjZ6gdmEnYXIqNv3sAN85h1g9VG0fJa136jK3GwbldVzv0cZlwKBUEWqGN0jx3gZTZRrZj6Glqz-WFoIGo9qYG-K1C7qrh7P-u1XijchzAjGey_IZz6ixL2iAopybzHb5SO-NKfVGoDmaHtYrG48jcwnXmUFrk2KREN-hF-X7RsLzk2/s500/Screen%20Shot%202022-09-30%20at%209.35.37%20PM.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="406" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1ZcgZsiplQhjZ6gdmEnYXIqNv3sAN85h1g9VG0fJa136jK3GwbldVzv0cZlwKBUEWqGN0jx3gZTZRrZj6Glqz-WFoIGo9qYG-K1C7qrh7P-u1XijchzAjGey_IZz6ixL2iAopybzHb5SO-NKfVGoDmaHtYrG48jcwnXmUFrk2KREN-hF-X7RsLzk2/s320/Screen%20Shot%202022-09-30%20at%209.35.37%20PM.png" width="260" /></span></a></div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">With one hand on the underside of the drum he uses a dead stroke to play the heartbeat rhythm that is most commonly played on the bass drum in samba drumset playing. He also uses open sounds for fills and variations in conjunction with the other hand (more on that in a moment). With his other hand he taps the side of the shell much like one would on a tantan or repique de mão. However, Dotô gets a more metallic sound by putting "rings" on his fingers. "Anel" is Portuguese for "ring", so the instrument name literally translates to "repique of the rings", but from what I've seen it appears to be more like thimbles on his finger tips. Nowadays players often tape coins to the side of the drum so that one doesn't have to remember their rings. Here he plays a telecoteco-ish pattern with some extra notes added, presumably to fill out the bar. With the same hand as the rings Dotô uses his thumb to play variations and fills on the top head.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">What you end up with is a groove that looks like this:</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9NBsm8BSW1kYiiYuGC1bIZrdQjsvwVfOB-s1sPkTm9m51WqGWFB4bypZYSGOG9_Egf7gOqrQnc39XemwiepafigojUCkdKzTio5b6fP2Gy_79DSUbHPH79TDGKLojAVyG9RN6NWmmSu7oEVSshqA6693xxs11-23ERYTBN8CDam_n8nsL8qE6hRI5/s276/1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><img border="0" data-original-height="44" data-original-width="276" height="64" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9NBsm8BSW1kYiiYuGC1bIZrdQjsvwVfOB-s1sPkTm9m51WqGWFB4bypZYSGOG9_Egf7gOqrQnc39XemwiepafigojUCkdKzTio5b6fP2Gy_79DSUbHPH79TDGKLojAVyG9RN6NWmmSu7oEVSshqA6693xxs11-23ERYTBN8CDam_n8nsL8qE6hRI5/w400-h64/1.jpg" width="400" /></span></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">And with the fills played on the top and bottom head</span></div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFfPUVw9aAb09E4I7tHwR_MKf6jzyw30053zWBTO0a1ARY1c_R22l9XbT9_Z-tvEnzoZTqyRahISYLhMcPGeTLgVZwbQIAJorLIHMM9acGt5UCyuEkcCivQMHRH4UUlaaHDly8brw1dX8sC4IeKoPcekFoFFte-vS_G8tpfyRjzhED4LETRDL_5r7M/s275/2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><img border="0" data-original-height="45" data-original-width="275" height="65" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFfPUVw9aAb09E4I7tHwR_MKf6jzyw30053zWBTO0a1ARY1c_R22l9XbT9_Z-tvEnzoZTqyRahISYLhMcPGeTLgVZwbQIAJorLIHMM9acGt5UCyuEkcCivQMHRH4UUlaaHDly8brw1dX8sC4IeKoPcekFoFFte-vS_G8tpfyRjzhED4LETRDL_5r7M/w400-h65/2.jpg" width="400" /></span></a></div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW9cCqaUAga0007t-RAA6wPm2GIycmj-p29St19O418lW0L0-GK7LLabMdFJx6mT0imUIvMYNWCuw7YIoF3cEAzTPnIBRGWI0MViKzbpZ_g5ULP8_QRokKOpGMiliAjy13JsVv3c3-orcQ3X27ygd4AncDFWadhp_IBuFvJbCUHPXeayFrud_qwWe-/s274/3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><img border="0" data-original-height="45" data-original-width="274" height="66" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW9cCqaUAga0007t-RAA6wPm2GIycmj-p29St19O418lW0L0-GK7LLabMdFJx6mT0imUIvMYNWCuw7YIoF3cEAzTPnIBRGWI0MViKzbpZ_g5ULP8_QRokKOpGMiliAjy13JsVv3c3-orcQ3X27ygd4AncDFWadhp_IBuFvJbCUHPXeayFrud_qwWe-/w400-h66/3.jpg" width="400" /></span></a></div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /><div style="text-align: left;">I've got some transcriptions coming soon and there are some wonderful ways we can apply this to the drumset, but in the meantime, here are the only videos I've been able to find of Dotô to give you an idea of the sound.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div></span></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/wyBLVch4BRc" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></div>Adam Osmianskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00279858833369288332noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8117964668899556736.post-13751278361461996012022-08-29T17:11:00.004+01:002022-09-01T17:39:38.011+01:00Brazil<p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Apologies for the light posting lately. I'm by no means a loyal follower of the TedEd series, but I did end up watching this one and it has some great advice that we can all apply to our drumming.</span></div><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">The full video is below, </span><span style="font-family: helvetica;">which starts with some of the science behind how and why these tips work, </span><span style="font-family: helvetica;">but here is a break down of the main points and how it applies to us as drummers.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"><b><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Minimize distractions</span></b></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">This one is tough for me sometimes. My place in London isn’t huge, so most of my physical materials are back in the States and I use a lot of PDFs. Also, I like playing along to records and loops, all of which requires the computer and or phone. But it really is important to try to steer clear of our devices. It takes awhile to get into “the zone”, and each text, call, or post pulls you out of said zone, and it takes awhile to get back in.</span></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"><b><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Start out slowly</span></b></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">For me, this is the most important one, and the hardest to get some of my students to do. Most of them just love to go “yeah, I got it, see?” and proceed to just blast through it. It makes me feel like the boring old teacher to bug them about it, but it really is the best way forward. Pushing tempos is great, but once something is under your hands, to me that is just the beginning. It’s at that point where you slow it way down, break down every aspect of the motion, and THEN….</span></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"><b><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Gradually increase the speed of the quality repetitions</span></b></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Even when I can get students to slow down they’ll often make huge jumps in tempo. In most cases tempo bumps should be no more than 10 bpm at a time, ideally less. There is somewhat of a historical precedent for speeding up while playing, namely the “rundown”, wherein you start a rudiment as slow as possible, gradually speed up until you reach your maximum speed, and then work your way down. But in general, especially when working on timekeeping or grooves it’s best to play for awhile at one tempo, stop, change the metronome, and start again at the new tempo.</span></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"><b><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Frequent repetitions with breaks</span></b></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Little and often is always preferable to cramming. I tell students that practicing even just 10 minutes a day for a total of 70 minutes is better than practicing for two hours the day before a lesson. If you can do 10/15 in the morning and 10/15 in the afternoon, then even better. Ideally, of course, we’d all spend a lot more time practicing that that, but you’d be surprised how much you’ll improve with two 15-minute practice sessions every day.</span></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"><b><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Divide your time used for effective practice into multiple daily practice sessions of limited duration</span></b></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">This is a new one for me that I’m going to try out. I tend to do fairly long practice sessions. A good hour or so on the pad, and then another few hours on the set. But perhaps I’ll try picking three or four areas of concentration and breaking things up a bit.</span></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 14px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"><b><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Practice in your brain in vivid detail</span></b></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"><b></b></span><br /></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">I’m a firm believer in this one. They used to have us do this in my drum corps days. Every night before bed they’d ask us to lay still for 11 minutes, close our eyes and go through the show in our heads, taking every step, playing every note, etc. And I now use this quite often when work on new ideas, particularly on the set. I picture the sticking, the motion, and the sound slowed down in my minds eye/ear.</span></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></span></p><p style="font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; text-align: center;"><br /></p><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/f2O6mQkFiiw" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></div>Adam Osmianskihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00279858833369288332noreply@blogger.com0
